A geographical indication is a type of intellectual property right that is primarily used for imparting the protection to the product with respect to its geographical origin and is governed by the Geographical Indications of Goods (Registration and Protection) Act, 1999 in India.

Geographical indication rights or a GI tag ensure the right quality of the product belonging to the specific region and thereby promote the geographical traditions and maintain the identity, quality, and reputation of the product arising out of that region.

Unlike other forms of intellectual property rights, GIs are collectively owned, and the law provides a certification regime that gathers all legitimate producers of the GI from the same geographical region within its ambit.
